Being a woman in construction: our Property Manager Julie’s story.

Position: Property manager

Time at Space Station: 2 years

It’s extremely important to us to level the playing field in the industries we work in, and construction and property is a huge part of this. For a long time, it’s been very heavily male-dominated, with very few women coming into the industry.

However, this is changing now, and we’re actively encouraging more women to set their sights on and succeed in this extremely rewarding and challenging career. Julie is one of these women, breaking barriers and setting an incredible example for every woman in construction that will follow her. We asked her some questions about how she got where she is today, and what she loves about property at Space Station:

Why did you get into the construction/property industry?

It’s always been in my genes. My dad was a builder and a joiner, so from a very young age I was following him around in my wellies, asking him to show me stuff and let me help. My love for the industry started there, and I made it my mission to be a part of it when I was older. Whenever we went anywhere, I was always fascinated by buildings and shared that passion and interest with my dad - and then my father-in-law in later years, who was a structural engineer.

What has been your biggest challenge?

That’s a difficult one. You see, I always knew I would be in this industry come what may, and being the person I am, I’ve always set myself challenges and goals to strive for. However, I think one of the biggest challenges was starting from college and realising I was one of only five young ladies on the course, then one of three by the end of year one, and then the only one left by the end of the final year… It was never an option for me to not finish, but that meant I had to work hard to prove that I was just as good and well deserving of my qualifications as the men! I’m very lucky to have had such wonderful support from my dad and my wonderful in laws, but it took a lot of inner determination to make that happen for myself.

What’s been your biggest success?

Challenging the norm, finishing my HND as the only young lady - with distinction - and then being asked to teach the ONC evening students as a result of that. I am proud of absolutely everything I have achieved, and it’s put me on a wonderful path of variety in terms of the roles I’ve held. And, most importantly, it’s ultimately led me to this one, which I am so chuffed to be doing!

What do you look forward to when going to work?

Working somewhere that gives me a challenge where I can make a real difference, and a workplace that is filled with positive, like-minded people who all enjoy going to work as much as I do. Every day is different, and new challenges present themselves all the time. Being able to stretch the grey matter muscle in order to find a solution is just fabulous, and it gives me all the motivation I need when I wake up in the morning. You spend a long time at work, so you must enjoy it - that’s my philosophy!

What kind of support have you received from Space Station in order to be successful in your role?

Since joining in April 2022, I’ve had a great induction and worked every day with colleagues who are approachable and, no matter how busy they are, will always find time to answer a question. Having this support has been vital in my role and has helped me feel confident enough to reach for even higher goals than the ones I had before.

What makes you feel proud to work for Space Station?

Space Station is a growing professional company with some exciting ambitions for the future that I can’t wait to be a part of. The thing that makes it so special, though, is that they’re doing it with a team of people who still hold the original family values close to their heart. This is a rare thing to have, and I absolutely love how it’s still central to everything here.

What’s your favourite part of the culture at Space Station?

The one team approach. Everyone really tries to uphold that and remains friendly, approachable and kind, no matter how busy they are or how stressful their day may be. We’re all working towards the same goal, so no matter what level you are, you have just as much value as the next person.

When do you feel most valued as an employee?

It’s the simple things … when someone says “thank you”, “good job”, “well done”! Space Station isn’t afraid of giving recognition to its employees, and that is a massive positive for any company or any person. Your great work will never go unnoticed.

What advice do you have for women who may be thinking about working in what were once traditionally male-dominated industries?

Don’t see it as that male industry it once was, see it as the role you want to succeed in! Be determined to achieve it and don’t stop learning and challenging yourself. As my dad once told me, “This is your life, you are only here once, so make it an awesome journey!”.
